In the wine valley outside of Hollister, we built a rammed earth home on a beautiful ranch. Architect Jonathan Feldman is renowned for his beautiful, environmentally sensitive projects. This is a self-sustaining house with geothermal heat, a net-zero solar electrical system, it’s own water and septic and earthen walls. Nothing here was wasted—we designed the forming for the rammed earth so that the lumber pieces can be reused either in the bridge or the house framing. The formwork for the rammed earth must be stronger than forms for concrete. Most rammed earth tests out at 300 to 600 PSI (pounds per square inch)—we were required to meet a 1500 PSI standard. We received a gold LEED rating on the project.
